In some ways I feel like this was my first real record. I only say that because I turned over some of the most critical duties to some really talented people instead of me trying to produce, mix and master. With this project I really realized that I'm a songwriter first and foremost, next I'm a musician and vocalist and lastly I'm a producer, so I probably shouldn't try to mix or master my own records and just stick to where I'm strongest. I also worked with Graham Colton who has had experience in big studios and making major label records so his advice on this approach made a big difference. This record is about acoustic, poppy songs. I really wanted to go back to the drawing board and keep it simple. That's not necessarily where I want to stay but for a debut album as a solo artist I wanted to come out of the gates with good songs and solid production. This EP is everything it was intended to be and I'm most proud of this one so far.

The Matt Stansberry Band (MSB) was a formal band project I formed in 2003 that had set band members. I recorded and toured under this lengthened band name until I went 'solo' in 2008. Past official MSBers include Denver Greene (bass 2004-2008), Ben Tinius (drums 2004-2008), Grant Stevens (keys/trumpet 2003-2007), Chris Verner (guitar 2008), Kyle Martin (drums 2004), Kyle Granger (bass 2004), Cary Hawkins (bass 2003) and Janoah Jackson (drums 2003). I'm forever grateful to these guys and I wouldn't be where I'm at today without each of them being involved and believing in me and what we could accomplish together.

This batch of songs covers a lot of ground. Some are extremely personal and heartfelt while others are just upbeat, fun and lighthearted while others touch on more serious issues. We recorded the initial tracks at Upstairs Productions in Oklahoma City. We tracked a majority of this album live, playing together as a band which captured some great collaborative energy. From there we just overdubbed all the extra ear candy, which ended up being about half the record. We have a lot going on with these tunes and I brought in several outside performers including Lucas Ross playing accordion, Cynthia Smith, Kelsey Humphreys and Jala Verner on vocals. I'd met Cynthia through her husband Ray, who just happens to be my mailman. He's a great guy and we'd hit it off over the years. Anyway, one day I found out his wife could sing gospel music, really, really well I might add, so I just had to get her on the record. We went all out on this one.

This record was a blast to make. We set up shop in this abandoned building space and recorded all of these songs live. We basically did one song a night and then I would go home and overdub vocals and a few minimal guitar tracks. The band had just gone from a four piece band to a three piece band so we wanted capture the sound of a power trio, which gave this album a lot of raw energy. It was almost like we had something to prove. We were all like ' yeah we can really play our instruments, we don't need auto tune or beat detective let's rock it out and keep it un-edited', so we did! Just like the majority of our efforts we really did everything on this record from producing, engineering, mixing, mastering, album artwork, promoting, etc. There's something you just can't beat about the do-it-yourself approach.

My brother-in-law, Josh Kingcade, really came up with the concept of doing a live DVD and after he mentioned it to me I really got excited. Not many bands get the opportunity to create a full length live show, DVD experience, so we went all out and got a crew together and put on an entertaining show both musically and visually. Looking back I feel like this was a major milestone for us as a band and created some great momentum for us.

The World Goes Up was the first real record I'd ever made. I engineered and produced it myself but we took our time on getting quality takes and quality tone. We recorded Hammond B3 at the UCO Jazz Lab in Edmond and really worked on getting good drum sounds at Oklahoma Christian University. This was also my first go at real editing. We edited things so it sounded all nice and tidy and Jason Lashley who mixed the record also did an amazing job on editing the songs in such a way that kept them musical and not too overdone. It's easy to get carried away and end up sounding too perfect and less and less human, but he found the sweet spot for us. This being the first record we took on I probably micromanaged it a tad (my bandmates might even say too much), but I still feel like you can really hear Denver, Ben and Grant's unique sounds and parts shining through and that makes this album special for me. It's been an honor playing music with those guys over the years.
